Network Hacked by Compromised HVAC System
![]()
Computer security has been around a long time but it just seems as if the hackers out there are always a step ahead. There are people out there aka hackers that live for this, looking for ways into networks, PCs and other devices including refrigerators. Some do it for the sheer thrill of it but some do it for fraudulent and criminal reasons.
The Internet of Things is Opening Up New Vulnerabilities
Most of us have heard of computer viruses affecting our own desktop and laptop computers as well as computer network servers. To protect these devices companies have developed and continue to develop antivirus software in order to keep up with the continuous on slot of computer viruses and malware targeting our computer equipment.
What most of us may not have heard of is that hackers have discovered another way into computer networks and PCs. As the world keeps getting more and more connected we are getting vulnerable to a hacker attack from devices that you would never think could be a threat.
As technology infiltrates our daily lives continuously it is also advancing on devices that used to be more low tech to put it plain English. Most devices now that are able to connect to a computer network or are able to have their firmware updated remotely can be exploited / hacked by would be criminally motivated individuals.
These devices are common in offices and homes. That laser printer on your desk or that multifunction copier down the hall can be vulnerable to hacking. Even at corporations HVAC system is susceptible to hacking as was the case not long ago at Target.
So How Did the Hack Work?
Hackers were able to use the HVAC system to gain entry to the Target computer network and install their own software on the network connected cash registers. The installed software was able to monitor and collect customer credit card data transactions. The hackers then stored the data on non-suspecting servers in the US and ultimately sent the data back to the hackers somewhere in Eastern Europe.
This type of hack has shed some light on what can happen when the world’s electronic devices are connected through computer networks and the internet. Large corporations, small to medium businesses as well as individuals at home need to ensure their networks and connected devices are kept safe and protected from hackers. For businesses it can be a large financial endeavor to keep all their equipment secure all the time, but not securing their systems could be even more costly in the long run as the implications to lost or stolen data can be detrimental to all involved, even national security. For individuals it is vital they keep all their antivirus and malware software current and contact an IT security professional if they are not sure of what they should be doing. Everyone’s computer needs are different so when in doubt contact a professional IT service company. I know that this will cost some money but how much would it cost should you get hacked?
Compute safe and virus free. 🙂
